Originally known as the Denver Rockets, the team was one of the founding franchises of the American Basketball Association (ABA) in 1967. Led by local favourite Byron Beck out of the University of Denver, the Rockets had winning records in each of their first three seasons. Anticipating a move to the NBA, where the Houston Rockets were already established, the team changed its name to the Denver Nuggets in 1974. The newly christened Nuggets posted the best record in the ABA in 1974–75 behind the standout play of guard-forward Ralph Simpson. However, Denver was upset by the Indiana Pacers in the Western Division finals. The Nuggets did advance to the ABA finals the following year after once again having the best record in the league, but they lost to the New York Nets in six games.
Denver Nuggets Rainbow Jersey
In 2018, NBA teams across the league officially unveiled their new Nike "City Edition" uniforms. These special Denver Nuggets rainbow jersey are "designed to represent insights and emotion from the court to the upper deck to the cities’streets, in pursuit of a unique way to capture each team and its city in a way that respects the past and present of the clubs while also positioning them for the future."
Some of the unique uniforms have already leaked but now we're getting a clearer picture of what to expect from teams like the Denver Nuggets, whom revealed their new Rainbow Skyline jerseys today. Referring back to the beloved uniforms worn from the early '80s to early '90s, the Nuggets' 2018-19 "City Edition" uniforms utilize the iconic Rainbow Skyline design with a twist.
Here's how the original version came about, per today's press release:
"The new City Edition uniform was inspired by the team’s original Rainbow Skyline uniform that was worn by the team from the 1981-82 season through 1992-93. The original logo was created by fans. Carl Scheer, in advance of the 1981 season, created a fan contest in which anyone could enter, and Nuggets staff would decide on the winning design."
"The front-runner was Scheer’s logo that featured the Denver skyline set against the Rocky Mountains and included a rainbow-colored background which became known as the “Rainbow Skyline”. The classic skyline uniforms were derived from this logo."
The return of the Rainbow Skyline uniforms marks 25 years since the design was originally retired as the team’s main uniforms. The last time the Nuggets donned the classic version of the uniform was for a one-night-only special event during Dikembe Mutombo’s jersey retirement ceremony on October 29, 2016.
This season, the Nuggets will rock the remixed Denver Nuggets rainbow jersey for a total of seven games, starting on Tuesday, November 13 when they host the Houston Rockets.
